BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL: THE MANDORLA and THE MEDICINE WHEEL

NB Please note the free email subscribe box at the top right of the page
In his book ‘Owning your Own Shadow’, Robert Johnson draws a distinction between contradiction and paradox. Contradiction is the normal human condition: we view one half of our experience as good, as desirable, and we judge and shut out that which is not so.

In our work and busyness-obsessed culture, you may feel guilty because you got up at 11am when there were all these things needing to be done. Or virtuous because you did indeed get up at 8am and got busy. The truth of it probably was that you had 2 conflicting wants: to lie around and dream, and to get things done. (And a guy with a big stick telling you one of them is right and the other wrong.) If you can hold both of these urges without judging either, without having to come down on one side or the other by feeling virtuous or guilty, than you are in paradox rather than in contradiction. And a new type of consciousness can emerge, that is outside of the usual boxes in which we and in which society finds its life. Really, it is outside of space and time, and there is joy and a deep relief around it, since we are no longer ‘doing’ something to ourselves, not carving ourselves up. We are with the Divine, with Spirit.

Contradiction is fundamental to the way we generally work. It is easier than paradox, though it comes with a price. Try it with politics: argue the case for the bunch you don’t vote for, appreciate their humanity. Most people don’t seem able to do this. In fact, it seems to be part of their ‘spirituality’ to remain in contradiction about their politics, and to heavily judge the other side as uncaring or whatever, instead of moving into paradox.

Listen to this TED talk if you want to move from political contradiction to paradox.
Generally, we want to know where we stand, and we want it simple. When we die – well, in medieval times, you had heaven and hell. That is simple. Nowadays you have extinction of consciousness – that is simple too. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it is simple. It is simple psychology that requires something 'certain' outside of itself in order to feel it is secure, that it has a foundation. Part of our job as healers is to open up those rigid tramlines, for they can also cause illness. But not to disrupt them so much that the person cannot cope, or takes against us. Spirit will generally show us how far we can go.

I offer Shamanic consultations, usually by skype, in which we can talk over anything you want to talk over. I may use the Medicine Wheel, Journeying, Astrology, Tarot or anything that works. And it centres around listening to ourselves in a deep way. I work on a donation basis, and I am happy with whatever is easy for you: I love this work. Contact: BWGoddard1@aol.co.uk

Mandorla at Chalice Well, Glastonbury
The Mandorla is a mystical medieval Christian symbol created by overlapping 2 circles. The almond shape where they overlap is the Mandorla – the word itself is Italian for almond. The 2 circles are the state of contradiction – of good and bad – in which we normally live, and in which religion finds it place. Where the circles overlap is where good and bad are held together in paradox. It is where the mystic goes, the mystic who knows God, who is an open channel for Spirit.

So notice it is only an overlap. It is an overlap because it is not a place we can live all the time. It is a special place, the place of vision, of visitation by poetry and by angels and other beings. Like it or not, we live in the world, experiencing opposites such as pain and pleasure, life and death, which come with having a body. It is important to incarnate, as well as to be aligned with the visionary dimension.

MEDICINE WHEEL
In the Medicine Wheel, the equivalent of the Mandorla is at the centre, the point of balance. The centre of the Wheel is not a mild dilution and equalising of the 4 elements that we find in each direction, but a dynamic fusing of them that creates something new, a new level of consciousness that is more complete. We find this idea in the Middle Way in Buddhism, which again can sound a bit watered down, neither one thing nor the other. But again it points to the diamond that is formed when large opposing forces are allowed to synergise.

In the Medicine Wheel I use, this principle lies in the Blue Road, across the East-West axis. The Blue Road represents gifts from Spirit that are not ours to determine. The Red Road is North-South, and is Mind and Emotion, something we can work with in our everyday lives, and which eventually results in the accession of Spirit of the Blue Road.

So the Blue Road. East-West is Fire and Earth, Spirit and Body. It is the light of the Sun and the darkness of the dream and of incarnation, of the struggles of everyday adult life (which the West also represents). It is this tension between the ideal and the real, along which we often take sides. Politically, you could say, the left represents the ideal, the East; the right represents the real, the West. One prioritises caring for people, the other the state of the economy. And of course both are needed, without judging either of them. And most of us find that so difficult.

The purpose of our lives, at least according to a Chippewa Cree guy I asked, is to become a balanced human being. I can go with that. If all we do is to discern and hold the different forces within ourselves, without judging between them, then Spirit will take care of the rest, for it will have room to come in and illuminate with its more complete way of knowing.
And this can be very difficult when we are in the grip of powerful feelings that we may just want to flee from and get drunk. Just stay with it, hold it, your guides are there loving you and egging you on. This is why I say the Centre of the Wheel is not like a dilute cordial that satisfies no-one, but more like the place where diamonds are created from huge pressures, that may indeed tear us apart, but for the purpose of revealing some new and more whole life within.

Profound magic: Possession by the Spirits
One way we can hold these different forces is through dancing them. Robert Johnson, as a therapist, had a client who would do this in the consulting room, while he cowered behind the sofa. This suggests it was pretty wild, which is how it can sometimes need to be. Uninhibited. This is something we have forgotten over 1000 years, as the controlling forces of organised Christianity took hold. So yes, we need an ongoing self-awareness of these contradictions. And then times, such as in trance dance or in prayer, where we can let these voices speak in their fullness. There is a Spirit behind them. All this is a profound alchemy.

SOUL RETRIEVAL: TO DO OR NOT TO DO?

The big question for me is whether it is best to do Soul Retrievals for other people, or help them to do it themselves. And I'm coming down on the side of helping others find their way themselves. Then they keep the power in the relationship and in the process, and they learn something. And if it takes months or longer, that is fine. There is no hurry. This is a slow-burn path.
And what is maybe sometimes missing in our culture is the place of prayer and ceremony also. And that leads on to the part that community can play, maybe needs to play, in healing. Imagine how much more powerful a healing is, if you have a load of people praying for your well-being at the same time as the shaman-guy is doing her wizardry. That is how Sweatlodges often work. Traditionally, you don’t do them just because it is Sunday or whatever, it is for a specific reason, like someone needs healing.

I used to do Soul Retrievals and other Shamanic bits and pieces up until the early noughties, and they were effective. But then people stopped coming, completely. Apart from once a few years ago, someone I knew had been sectioned, I turned up at their request and my helper put them back in their body, and a few days later they were released.

The stoppage wasn't personal, because people were turning up for astrology readings, where my primary function seems to be able to help people through transitions, how to BE in those confusing times where your old life doesn’t work anymore and you think maybe you’re going nuts. Which maybe you are, from a conventional point of view – rather like in American Beauty – but from a real point of view, you’re getting sane at last.

Anyway, it was energetic - something in me switched off, and has remained switched off, even though I have changed considerably in the meantime. However, if I have led people on their own healing journeys, great things have happened. And that can be through formal journeying, or just talking, and maybe using the directions/elements of the Medicine Wheel ceremonially as places to talk from.
So for me it's been a big message from Spirit not to do Soul Retrievals. (I’m not legislating for others here!) My early experience of journeying in 1997 was of my soul being 'retrieved', or uncovered, spontaneously, with plenty of dismemberment and reconstituting, and it changed me deeply in a short period. So I was doing it myself, in conjunction with the Spirits/the forces of the Unconscious. Even though the guy teaching me this ‘core shamanism’ tried to discount my experience, saying that others had to do it for you. Cojones! But these early experiences are formative, and if someone representing a tradition tells you something at that point, it can take years to fully convince yourself otherwise.

What comes into consciousness in Soul Retrieval isn't necessarily just missing, or repressed, pieces of soul that should never have gone missing. It can also be tied up with the stage we have reached as a human being, it can be also about a further stage of consciousness emerging.

A recent experience of Soul Retrieval was massive for me. This was last June, and it was after 2 Sweatlodges in one weekend. Sweatlodges are often a catalyst for me. I experienced an accession of a feminine side to myself, and it’s probably partly an age thing. I am still processing it 7 months on, in fact it will take years to unfold.

But one of my reflections is that part of it has been yes, stuff to do with childhood, where there was no room to be anything but a one-sided male. But another part of it has been a woman with an earth-power and the sort of wisdom that only comes with age. And who is to say that the piece that went missing in childhood wasn't also part of some necessary bigger picture? Like being part of a family line in order to bring some healing? Or having something difficult to push against?

So 'retrieval' isn't necessarily the right word. The way I was taught it had this emphasis of something having gone wrong that shouldn't have, and that being remedied. And there can obviously be truth in that, but it is also more complex. Our woundings are also a path to our soul, in a strange way we can need them to grow – the cracks where the light gets in - and it can be almost like they were planned. Sometimes. Or it may just be time for a new bit of our soul to come into consciousness, a new round of balancing on the Wheel. The ways of the Spirit, and the pattern of its unfoldment, is a mysterious and long-term thing, and it needs a big perspective.

BERLIN FINALE

From time to time I will publish blogs that just reflect my own interests, rather than the overall Shamanic theme of this blog. So please bear with me, this is one such! Though there is a connection....

This documentary novel had me gripped. It is an extraordinary account of the last 2 weeks of the Third Reich, set in Berlin as the Russians advance towards the city, while it is bombed day and night by the British and Americans. The author, a writer, spent much of the 30s unemployed because of his critical stance towards the Nazis, then during the war he was made to work on the railways. The descriptions of the ruins of wartime Berlin are very exact and detailed, yet poetic also: windows of ruined houses like blank eye sockets.

And the same goes for his descriptions of people. He returns again and again to the psychology of different types of people under Nazism and what they became. He is positively Germanic in his forensic psychological analysis. And central to that analysis is the lack of personal responsibility, the lack of conscience, the cowardice. And you find that the problem for most Germans at the end is not Nazism itself, but the fact that it failed. And that probably tells us something general, and rather dismal, about humanity.

My criticism of the book - which came out in serial form straight after the war, and was a bestseller - is that it is too long. It is 660 pages of not very large print, and for the first 450 or so it is gripping. But he needed to chop 100 pages out of the last 250.

He also has a perspective on humanity that I think anthropological research has probably shown to be unfounded: namely, that early man was 'primitive', ruled by his instincts, that western culture has largely been a process of lifting man out of those base insincts, and that Nazism was a reversion to them. My experience of early cultures that are still living is that they are very civilised in the best sense, they are sophisticated and ethical. Our problem, in my opinion, is that we have large societies that are inevitably structured by impersonal rules rather than by relationships. That is a problem we have not solved.

LEWIS MEHL-MADRONA VISITS

I have arranged for Lewis Mehl-Madrona and his wife Barbara Mainguy to run a long weekend on 27/28/29 November this year at the Clophill Centre near Bedford, UK. I was on a weekend with them a year ago in Cumbria, and I have read 2 of Lewis' books, Coyote Medicine and Coyote Healing. We haven't decided on a format yet, though there will be a sweatlodge on the Friday, and I expect 2 days of workshops after that in a local village hall.

Lewis works in quite an open way, using story and journeying and hands-on healing - what he calls Cherokee Bodywork. One method he has is to get a partner to massage part of you that gives you trouble, and then see what stories or images present themselves to you as you are being massaged. If you pay attention to these stories or images, they can become another level for you to address that trouble.

He talks about his experiences as a healer in his books, and he is also a conventional doctor. He is passionate about both approaches. He has Cherokee ancestry, and in my opinion has a depth in his approach to healing that is both traditional, and not what we usually encounter in our trainings over here. So for example, if someone comes for healing, you will spend time getting to know them. Then you may get to know their family, for that gives you more information. And if you have a healing ceremony, you will have the family/community present too, praying for the wellbeing of that person. And your first job as a healer is to get the patient wanting to be well, and in contact with the Spirit dimension of their lives.

There is a certain amount of shared accommodation at Clophill, or you can camp. It will be bring food to share (there is a Co-op down the road) and we will be keeping prices down. If you are interested, please let me know in the comments below or email me at BWGoddard1@aol.co.uk and I will get back to you when we have more details. And put those dates in your diaries!
