BARRY GODDARD
Whatever might Chaos Shamanism be? It's something I've invented, after 30 or so years meandering along this Shamanic path. Chaos refers to the ancient Greek word, meaning the Vast Abyss out of which the universe arose. Chaos in this sense brings us back to the mystery at the heart of things. It is the reality to which all shamanic practices and ceremonies point. Chaos Shamanism is a specific approach within the wider modern shamanic project of reclaiming the indigenous soul. It begins with the remembrance that humans belong to the natural world. Everything comes from that. It is inspired by tradition, and may be deeply versed in it, but is not beholden to it. It always remains free to reinvent as necessary, and is guided by Spirit. In this sense, Chaos Shamanism is inherently heretical, from the ancient Greek hairetikos, meaning 'able to choose'.
